The Real Reason Most People Never Start Golf

It's not the cost. It's not the time. It's the fear of looking foolish — swinging and missing on a crowded driving range while strangers pretend not to watch. Add in the mystery of what clubs to buy, what to wear, and how any of the rules work, and most would-be golfers in Grand Island just... never start.

Meanwhile the invites keep coming. The company scramble. The bachelor party round. Friday evenings when your friends head to Jackrabbit Run and you stay home. Golf is where friendships and business happen in a town like this, and sitting it out gets old.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: every single golfer you're intimidated by was once exactly where you are. The only difference is they started.

Built for First-Timers: The Chronicle Golf Beginner Path

We designed our beginner program to remove every excuse. You learn indoors in a private TrackMan bay — climate-controlled, no crowd, no dress code. We hand you the clubs. You just show up.

Your first three lessons, mapped out

1Contact.

Grip, setup, and the simple move that gets the club on the ball. Expect your first genuinely good shot inside 30 minutes — it's addicting.

2The full swing.

We build your driver and iron swing step by step, using TrackMan feedback so you can see progress in numbers, not guesses.

3Short game & course prep.

Chipping, putting, and exactly how to survive your first nine holes — including which Grand Island course to play first and what to expect.

Beginner promise: if you don't hit the best golf shots of your life in your very first lesson, that lesson is free.

Why Beginners Learn Faster Here

Most new golfers pick up bad habits on day one that take years to unlearn. That doesn't happen when your very first swings are measured by TrackMan and shaped by a coach who's taught hundreds of first-timers.

Your coach is the 2015 Nebraska State Golf Champion and the General Manager of Nebraska's largest indoor golf facility — but more importantly for you, he's patient, plain-spoken, and genuinely loves teaching people who've never played. There are no dumb questions in a beginner lesson. Whiffs are expected. Laughing is encouraged.

And because we start indoors, Nebraska weather is irrelevant. January blizzard? Perfect learning conditions inside. You can go from "never touched a club" in winter to "playing nine at Jackrabbit Run" by the time the courses green up in April.

New Golfers, Real Results

"I whiffed my first three swings and Casey just grinned and said 'good, now we know where we're starting.' Two months later I played my first round with my husband. I'm hooked."

— Sarah K., Grand Island

"Started at 58 years old after retiring. Best decision I've made — I play twice a week now and my son and I finally have a standing tee time."

— Gary P., Doniphan

"Never held a club before last winter. Started indoors in January, played my first real round in May, and didn't embarrass myself at our company scramble."

— Dan W., Grand Island

Beginner Golf Lessons — FAQ

Am I too old to start golf?

No. We've started students in their 60s and 70s who now play weekly. Golf is one of the few sports you can pick up at any age, and our indoor setting means you build your swing at your own pace with no one watching.

Do I need my own golf clubs for beginner lessons?

No — we provide clubs for all beginner lessons. In fact, we'd rather you NOT buy clubs first. After a few lessons we'll tell you exactly what to buy for your swing and budget, which saves most beginners hundreds of dollars in wrong purchases.

How many lessons before I can play a real course?

Most beginners are ready for nine holes after 3–5 lessons. Our first-three-lessons curriculum covers contact, the full swing, and short game basics, then we help you plan your first round — including which Grand Island course to start on.

What should I wear to my first golf lesson?

Anything comfortable you can move in — athletic wear and sneakers are perfect. We're indoors, so weather never matters. No dress code, no collared-shirt requirement, no golf shoes needed.

Are group or private lessons better for beginners?

Private lessons progress faster because every minute is about your swing. That said, learning with a spouse or friend is fun and splits the cost — family and multi-person lessons are some of our most popular bookings for new golfers.

I'm nervous about being embarrassed. Is that normal?

It's the single most common thing new students tell us — and it disappears about ten minutes into the first lesson. You're in a private indoor bay, not on a crowded driving range. There's no audience, no judgment, and whiffing the ball is a completely normal part of day one.

Can I start lessons in the winter?

Winter is actually the perfect time to start. Learn indoors from November through March and you'll step onto a course for the first time in spring with a real swing already built — while everyone else is knocking off three months of rust.

Your First Good Golf Shot Is One Lesson Away

Private bay. Clubs provided. A coach who's walked hundreds of beginners through day one. The hardest part of golf is booking the first lesson — do that part now.
